Optimist Learn to Race is an intermediate course and the next step after Opti Camp. Classes run Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Sailors develop the fundamental skills needed to progress toward joining our Racing Team.

A key focus of this program is building self-sufficiency and confidence in all aspects of sailing. Sailors rig, launch, and manage their boats independently, with instructors providing guidance and support as needed. Once on the water, each sailor operates their Optimist dinghy on their own.

Practice drills are designed to help sailors master boat handling on all points of sail and confidently navigate a racecourse. Instruction also includes an introduction to the Racing Rules of Sailing and the principles of good sportsmanship that guide competitive sailing.

When sailors are ready to compete, they may participate in club races, GLSS Dinghyfest, and the ILYA Championship Regatta.
