Optimist Race Team

Optimist Race Team is a course designed to advance young sailors through competitive sailing scene. Practices run Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and include structured drills and activities that prepare sailors for upcoming races. Participants receive coaching support during the LGYC race series as well as at the LBSS Optimist Dinghy Regatta, GLSS Dinghyfest, and the ILYA Championships.

This program offers a positive team-oriented environment where young sailors learn and apply advanced racing skills. Each day begins with a team meeting to review previous efforts and set goals. Sailors then participate in a chalkboard lesson or land-based activity emphasizing a specific skill before receiving a game plan for the day’s practice or race. Sailors then rig and launch independently under coach supervision.

On the water, coaches lead sailors through focused drills and training exercises or supervise the team during sponsored events. After each on-the-water session, coaches provide a debrief and individual performance feedback.

Racing season starts on June 8 and runs through the end of the Optimist Inland Championship

Optimist Race Team practices are in the morning from 9-12.

On Wednesdays, the Race Team meets at 8:30 before LGYC Club Races

Coaching at the Dinghyfest and other selected regattas is included
